How to check your unused Sun Life benefits

Sign in at sunlife.ca with your Sun Life member account and go to your coverage.

Sun Life does not show you one list of everything you have. The coverage page has a search box, and you look up one service at a time. Type in massage, then physiotherapy, then your psychologist, and each search returns that balance on its own. If your plan covers your family, a “Whose coverage” selector switches between people, and you search again for each of them.

Why nobody can tell you what you have

Your maximums, your categories and your dates all come from your employer’s contract with Sun Life. Sun Life administers the plan. Your employer chose its shape.

So two people who both have Sun Life can have almost nothing in common. One might have a single maximum that massage, physiotherapy, chiropractic and acupuncture all draw from together. Another might have a separate limit for each, none of which touch. That is why no page anywhere, including this one, can tell you your numbers.

Not everything resets on the same day

This is where most advice gets it wrong. Your plan does not have one expiry date.

  • Massage, physiotherapy, chiropractic, acupuncture and naturopathy often share one maximum between them, and it usually runs on a benefit year. Whatever is left at the end of that year goes back to zero and does not roll forward. Many plans end that year on December 31.
  • Psychologists, psychotherapists and counsellors usually have their own maximum, separate from the one above, on the same yearly cycle.
  • Glasses, contact lenses and eye exams usually do not work that way. Vision runs on a cycle counted from the last time you used it, commonly 48 months, so the question is what date you next become eligible.
  • A health spending account is the one to watch. It is a flat pot you can put towards almost anything the rest of the plan does not cover, and it is genuinely use it or lose it at the end of the benefit year.

All of those dates are on your coverage page. Read them rather than assuming.

What Benloop does

Benloop links with your Sun Life account on your behalf and puts all of it on one screen: every service you are covered for, what is left in each, and the date it either resets or comes available again. Your whole family in one place, without searching for them one at a time. Benloop reminds you before those dates arrive, while there is still time to book.

If you do not have somewhere to go, the Benefits Concierge will find you one. Tell it what you are looking for, where you are, and anything else that matters to you, and it sends back a shortlist of clinics with a link to book.

See what yours still covers.

Benloop is free for members. Your clinic never sees your name or your balance.
