How to check your unused Manulife benefits
Sign in with your Manulife ID at id.manulife.ca and open your group benefits.
If you are hunting for a password, this is where most people get stuck. Manulife ID is one login across their banking, investment and insurance products, so the account you need may already exist for something with nothing to do with your health plan. There is no separate benefits password to find.
Why nobody can tell you what you have
Your maximums, your categories and your dates all come from your employer’s contract with Manulife. Manulife administers the plan. Your employer chose its shape.
Manulife plans vary in one way that catches people out. Some give you a single maximum that massage, physiotherapy, chiropractic and acupuncture all draw from together. Others give each of those its own separate limit that nothing else touches. Read them as one pot when they are separate and you will think you have a fraction of what you actually have.
Not everything is counted the same way
Your plan does not have one expiry date, and not all of it is counted in dollars.
- Massage, physiotherapy, chiropractic, acupuncture and naturopathy usually run on a benefit year, counted in dollars. Whatever is left at the end of it goes back to zero. Many plans end that year on December 31.
- Psychologists, psychotherapists and counsellors usually have their own maximum, separate from the one above.
- Glasses, contact lenses and eye exams usually run on a cycle counted from the last time you used them, commonly 48 months. The question is what date you next become eligible.
- A health spending account is the one to watch. A flat pot for almost anything the rest of the plan does not cover, and genuinely use it or lose it at the end of the benefit year.
- Some limits are counted in visits, not money. One eye exam, one set of X-rays. A balance of one means one appointment, not one dollar.
All of those dates are on your own plan. Read them rather than assuming.
